The Darwin Golf Club is to host the 2009 Arafura Games.
The Arafura Games is a leading international sporting competition for emerging champions of the Asia-Pacific and beyond. It is not designed for current world beaters or Olympic champions, instead it provides a high quality stepping stone for athletes as part of their journey to compete at the highest level.
The Arafura Games is a bi annual event and in 2009 there is an exciting line up of events across 27 sporting disciplines including Golf. The golf competition is a 72-hole event which competitors are restricted to a handicap of 12 or under for men and 18 or under for women. A Team Event is also played in conjunction with the 72 hole event.
Although Golf has been part of the Arafura Games since its inception in 1991, Golf NT is committed to raising the profile of Golf at the 2009 Arafura Games by appointing two Ambassadors.
Peter Thomson world-renowned golfer and winner of five British Opens, has put his name to the event. The Peter Thomson Championship will be played in conjunction with the men's 72-hole event and the Peter Thomson Trophy will be presented to the winner.
Ron Baddley, father of Australian professional golfer, Aaron Baddley and organisor of the Aaron Baddley International Junior Tournament is also actively promoting golf for the Arafura Games.
Golf Australia is assisting with raising the profile of the golf competition by endeavouring to send both a Men's Team as well as a Women's Team to compete in 2009.
