Darwin Kingfishers def. Darwin Frillies 4-2
Humpty Doo def. RAAF 4-2
Palmerston Raiders drew with Palmerston Rebels 3-3
Rounds 2 and 3
What a fabulous weekend we had! Thanks very much to Sarath & everyone from Katherine Country Club for organising such an excellent venue and facilities, for extending assistance in obtaining carts, charging carts and storage of golf clubs. Special thanks also to Jeanie for getting all matches underway on time and organising cards and lunch tickets, and thanks to chef Graham for the delicious fresh sandwiches and rolls waiting for us in the clubhouse. All teams also enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the club Saturday night with some after parties allegedly extending until tee time on Sunday.
The course was in suburb condition with all the ladies enjoying playing a different course.
The most special thanks must go to the Katherine players who joined various teams for the rounds - Emma - RAAF, Judy - Kingfishers, Jenny - Kingfishers and Kirsty - Rebels. It was Kirsty's first taste of matchplay and she thoroughly enjoyed it declaring she wants to play pennants next year.
Unfortunately Frillies were unable field a team either round and forfeited their matches. All other matches were draws, such was the even nature of the competition this weekend.
Congratulations to Humpty Doo for their comprehensive win over Rebels (6 to 0) on their home course. This gives them a very handy lead of 6 points on the leaderboard which will be very hard (but not impossible) to beat over the round robin series.
The other winner for the day was Kingfishers with a 4 to 2 win over Raiders with RAAF & Frillies match a draw.
Congratulations to all teams for braving the wet season conditions for Round 5 at RAAF on 18 December. Wins to Darwin Frillies, Humpty Doo and RAAF Darwin.
The Frillies had a good win over the Palmerston Rebels 4.5-1.5. While Darwin Kingfishers put up a good battle against RAAF but went down 4-2. Humpty Doo reinforced the table leading performance with an impressive 5-1 victory over the Palmerston Raiders.
Unfortunately due to monsoonal conditions the round at Darwin GC was declared a complete washout.
Unfortunately due to monsoonal conditions the round at Palmerston GC was declared a complete washout.
The weather was very kind to us yesterday which allowed Round 8 to be played with all matches concluded.
Congratulations to Humpty Doo who continued their winning ways with a stellar 4.5 to 1.5 victory over Frillies. RAAF & Kingfishers also had big wins over the Palmerston teams who unfortunately were unable to field full teams on the day. Refer attached leaderboard.
The RAAF Darwin course was in great shape given all the rain with only a couple of fairways with boggy patches. I understand that a few new ball washers were discovered with most drains running.
Round 9 was played at Humpty Doo on Saturday 25 February with good and bad news. The good news was that the rain held off and all matches started were able to be completed, the bad news was that there were a number of forfeits with some teams struggling to fill all slots.
The current leaderboard going into the final round is below.
Humpty Doo will romp in the winners of the round robin competition with no team being able to get close to the reigning pennant holder all year. The battle is on for who will play Humpty Doo in the final with Kingfishers 2 points ahead of RAAF. This sets the stage for a great Round 10 this Saturday with Kingfishers playing RAAF - essentially, whoever wins this round will be the other team in the final. If it is a draw Kingfishers will win the right to play Humpty Doo.
Congratulations to Humpty Doo for finishing on top of the table with another resounding victory over Palmerston Raiders in the final round of the 2016 2017 pennants. Also congratulations to Kingfishers who finished in second position beating RAAF to win the right to challenge Humpty Doo for the pennant.
Frillies also had a big win on the weekend over Palmerston Rebels - so well done!
As Humpty Doo has finished on top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of the round robin matches, they have the right to choose the course and the day on which the grand final will be played. Val has advised that this will be Humpty Doo on Saturday March 25.
Scheduled tee time for the grand final matches is as follows: Humpty Doo & Kingfishers tee off the 1st at 8:30am
